completely unrealistic. A Roman general would never engage into personal combat against some barbarians.

Great scene. Fire arrows didn‘t make sense though. They do not fly far and the enemy can see them coming and raise their shields. But looked cool. The legionaries would also have thrown a volley with their pila(spears) before the lines clashed. That would have stopped quite a few of the attacking barbarians. Still one of the best battle scenes of all time.

Terrible acting, score, actor choices. They made Commodus and Marcus look like stooges. Wtf is this pirates of the carribean music? Awful sets and costumes also.

What a mistake to engage the Romans in a set piece battle.

From the late 70's to early 2000s John Williams was the King of Film Score, but since he has retired, I'd say Hans Zimmer is the current King.

I think this type of battle was not common between Roman and Germanic army. The Germanic tribes knew very well after some battles that the Roman army has better equipment and tactic. They usually tried to use the thick forest and swamps to their advantage so they used almost a partisan type of tactic against them, it is why later the Roman legions were also afraid to go too deep into the big ancient forest of Germania. Also it is why the Romans created some mysterious tales about the people in Germania, as most of it was never conquered by the Romans.

This battle happened because Arminius took three Roman legions... assuming this is after the massacre of the Teutoburg forest by the hands of the Sicambri, Chauci and the mighty Frisii of the northern "germanic" tribes east of the Rhine.
